There are 15 habits we do or do not do every day that are killing our spines. Weight bearing exercise is good for our bones so we should be doing more exercises like that and be careful of some of the cardio exercises we do like cycling. Anything that causes our heads and neck to be at a weird angle is bad for us. Yoga is good because it promotes good posture and that helps our spines everyday. We do things every day like work at our desks and play on our phones and we do so with terrible posture which is bad for our backs. Another thing people are doing is smoking. This causes the disc’s in our backs to not get the correct amount of fluids and nutrients we need causing them to deflate. We should be getting more calcium and vitamin D into our bodies. We should be getting 15 minutes of sunlight a day for our vitamin D and eating more dairy for our calcium. We do things like drink a lot of caffeine and medications that stop us from absorbing calcium. Heavy backpacks bags, and heavy jewelry are also really bad because they put a strain on the back. Also, how we lift things put a strain on our spines, we should be squatting down to lift things and not bend over to pick them up. Then, finally, heals are bad for our backs because they put our backs at a weird angle and create back pain. Experts say that if we have to wear heals, go with a lower heal or a wedge rather than a stilettos.
- Healthy habits, like not smoking, can have a large effect on spinal health
- Just getting enough calcium is insufficient for healthy bones if we are not also getting enough vitamin D
- Sitting improperly or craning our necks for lengthy intervals can cause damage to the spine over time
“When we are leaning down to stair at our screens, the forward-head posture causes the upper spine into an over-flexed position, which can compress the spinal discs over time”
