A fairly new workout program has been popping up in gyms across the world called CxWorx. Unlike gimmicky programs promising to help you “shed pounds fast” and “get ripped,” CxWorx has a more therapeutic goal: to foster strength and cooperation among the muscles of the core and prevent lower back pain.
“Core” has been a bit of a buzzword in the fitness world for some time now, and there’s a good reason why. There are a number of exercises, machines and programs designed to deliver the elusive 6-pack abs, but growing interest in body balance and injury prevention among fitness enthusiasts has been shifting the focus from the superficial 6-pack stomach muscles to the whole core group which includes muscles in the lower back, hips, pelvis and deep within the stomach.
About the Program
CxWorx is designed to improve functional strength; the program doesn’t only tone muscles but encourages them to work together well. The main benefit of functional over purely aesthetic training is that the former helps your body work better and avoid injury while the latter has limited functional gains and can actually encourage injury by causing muscle imbalances.
A session of CxWorx is 30 minutes long. A typical session begins with some education into the value and workings of your core muscles and proceeds with a warmup, designed to get fresh blood flowing to your muscles and to stimulate the recruitment of various muscle groups. The program contains both isolation and integration exercises. Isolation exercises target one muscle group to maximize strengthening, while integration exercises engage a number of muscle groups together. These latter exercises are very important for functional training, since the way the body actually moves generally involves integrated muscle recruitment. Planks and bridges are fine examples of integration exercises included in the CxWorx program. For an idea of what a class looks like, see this video clip:
While some people are happy to exercise at home, others need or want more structure. A group class, equipped with a motivating instructor and invigorating soundtrack, may help you meet your health and fitness goals better than a DVD in your living room. And you’re not likely to get bored with this program – every few months, they are revamped with new music and “coreography.” If you’re looking to improve your functional strength and fend off lower back pain in a structured core workout program, consider CxWorx.
